Children's Blessing

Lord, thank you for our children. May they know how much you love them. Lord, we surrender them and their futures to you; may their plans be inspired by you. Bless them with love and desire for you and for what is important to you. Surround them and their friends with your presence. Lord, encourage them and bring them your joy. Amen

From the Pastor's Desk - November

As I read this today, the anchoress Julian of Norwich came to mind. What is an anchoress? Well, an anchoress is a woman who has anchored herself to the church. She literally was shut in a room of the church for the rest of her life. She never left the church, and never left her room. Do you remember Anna in the Bible; it is kind of like that.

Who is Julian of Norwich? Julian of Norwich was a godly woman who deeply knew Jesus. She was known for prayer and words of wisdom as people sought her out. She lived out this verse from the Psalms. She lived in the house of the Lord all her days and saw his beauty. Her life didn’t start that way, but that is where it led her. It’s believed that she lost her family during the plagues of the 1300’s. She was sick herself; to the point the priest had given her last rites. As he was reading over her, she saw Jesus bleeding on the cross. A week later, she was fully recovered. It was after that she dedicated her life fully to the Lord as an anchoress.

God doesn’t call very many of us to complete isolation, to never leave a room of a church, or a hut in the wilderness. But he does call all of us to him. If we really want to grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord, we need to spend time with him. Of course, we study the Word of God, and people get excited about that. But do you take the extra time to let the Word of God study you? Do you let his words speak to you and listen to what he has for you?

For example, take the first line of our verse of the month, what is the one thing you ask of the Lord. If you take all of the things you ask of the Lord and boil them down to one thing, what would it be? The one thing David asked was to be in the house of the Lord and to see his beauty. That may not be your one thing right now, that’s okay. We all have our own relationship with God that is unique and special. We need to take the time necessary to let that relationship grow, deepen, and be completely our own with him.

If you have a hard time with intimacy, you can know you are safe to be vulnerable with the Lord. David knew he could be safe in the presence of God and shared that with him.
           Because he will shelter me in his own dwelling during troubling times;
           he will hide me in a secret place in his own tent;
           he will set me up high, safe on a rock. Psalm 27:5

His fear was to have a safe place to live because he was on the run from people trying to kill him. God was his safe place to live. What is your fear? Trust that God can meet your needs and you can give him your fears.
