Children's Blessing

Lord, thank you for our children. May they know how much you love them. Lord, we surrender them and their futures to you; may their plans be inspired by you. Bless them with love and desire for you and for what is important to you. Surround them and their friends with your presence. Lord, encourage them and bring them your joy. Amen

Fellowship Time

Please join us for some refreshments and pleasant company in the fellowship hall following the worship service. Please bring finger food for everyone to enjoy. We hope to see you there!

From the Pastor's Desk - June

This past week I read a bit on the name of God from a Hebrew perspective. God’s name is so holy that it’s not allowed to be spoken. There are a lot of words used to describe God, such as love, light, holy, perfect, provider, etc. However, they all fall short because none of them are complete, even if all of them were said altogether. When Moses asked God who he should tell the Jewish leaders had sent him, God said to tell them “I am” sent you. Many Christians are pretty casual with the name of God. We hear God’s name used as a part of a curse or as an exclamation. We, as people, have minimized God in our minds. Of course, we can’t minimize God, but we can minimize our understanding of God and what we think about him. Here’s a question to think about. Do we miss God and miss what he is trying to do because of our casual understanding and treatment of God?

As a Christian, maybe you don’t use God’s name in that way. But something I’ve been thinking about that I do, and maybe you do too, is how I use the name of Jesus at the end of every prayer I pray. I have been thinking about this for a while, then a few weeks ago, we had a speaker come to our church and share on this very thing. Yes, I think God was trying to get my attention. We read God’s Word, we pray, even live the way God wants us to live, but do we really understand the depth of what we are saying when we end our prayers, “in Jesus’ name”? I want to be very careful that I don’t put the name of Jesus on something that isn’t worthy of his name, or to use his name out of habit rather than honor, respect, and understanding. It is changing the way I pray. I don’t want to pray a prayer that isn’t worthy of putting the name of Jesus on it.

These words in the Gospel of Mark really stood out to me today. “He meant to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.’ And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased.” (Mark 6:48b-51a)

When Jesus said, “It is I,” the literal translation is “I am.” They didn’t have to be afraid because it wasn’t a ghost; it was God himself.

My heart softens toward God as I realize that he joins us right where we are. God joined us right where we are when he came in human form, Jesus. God joins us when we’re in our own personal storm. He steps into the boat with us while the storm is still going on. He doesn’t wait until things are better to be with us, he’s with us here and now, good and hard times.

Back to praying in the name of Jesus. Let’s not get paralyzed by not saying the right thing so we don’t pray at all. Call out, Jesus will join you. He will help you see the power and character of his great name.
