A Word from the Pastor - November 2022

A few days ago, my cat was at the door, meowing, trying to get my attention to let her in. I went to the door, only to see she had a gift in her mouth for me. I’ve read, and been told, that when a cat brings you a “dinner” it believes you can’t provide for yourself and you need its help. This is so funny, because we often do the same thing with God. We come to him in prayer, with an amazing plan. We give it to him, then ask him to bless it. In the back of our minds, we may even think we’re doing God a favor, helping him out.

Thinking back to my cat, it is really me who provides the meals my cat needs to survive, not the other way around. Yes, my cat does do me a much needed service by keeping the mouse population down, but I’m still its provider. In the same manner, God doesn’t need us to take care of him, or to do his bidding. He will continue with or without our interactions with him. God has always been and God will always be. No one is God’s provider, he is ours. This world would not exist if it weren’t for God’s love expressed through his creativity as he formed order out of chaos, the earth and all of its inhabitants from his word and us from his perfectly created earth. So, he definitely doesn’t need us to take care of it, or try to make it better. Yet, he did give us the task of taking care of it.

Even when it comes to leading people to him, he doesn’t need us to show people who he is. However, God chooses to use us to bring people to him. We’re to be his light in the world. God doesn’t need us to do his work in this world, but he chooses to use us. The amazing thing is, it doesn’t matter how much or how little we think we have to offer. What is important is our heart’s motive. If God wanted to, he could speak audibly to anyone he wants. Yet, he chooses to use us to be his voice. He could rain down riches on anyone he wants. Yet, he uses us to help provide the needs of the poor. God most often uses his people to help others see his glory, not because he has to, but because he wants to. A day will come when everyone will see the glory of God. In this verse, Jesus reminds God's people that they are to be the light of the world. It is the same message God gave Ezekiel for the people of Israel. Nothing has changed from the Old Testament, to the New Testament, to today. God’s people are meant to be the light of the world. One way God displays his glory is through the light of his people. May God’s glory shine through you for those around you to see.
