Welcome to Abundant Life Fellowship. We are a Free Methodist church located in lovely Chewelah, WA. As a body of believers, we strive to advance the good news of Jesus Christ, to reach out to the lost and wounded among us, and to make our church a safe place for people to experience God's love and to be empowered for service through being conformed to His image. If you are ever in the heart of Stevens County, please stop by and worship with us and discover what the Lord has in store for you.

For the month of April, I’ve been practicing the discipline of silence. This isn’t simply trying to find a quiet place to kick back and rest. Nor is it the type of silence where a person tries to block out all thoughts for as long as possible, “empty your mind.” No, the silence I’m talking about is sitting still enough, in my thoughts and the activities around me, in order to be with God. In this stillness, you don’t have to perform, or try to hear the voice of God, or make any kind of effort at all. It’s about letting go of all those efforts. It’s about simply being authentic, knowing God is there with you. You don’t have to be happy or sad, but you can be if that is what happens.

It's in this place of silence with the Lord that we learn to let down our guards and learn to trust the Lord on a deeper level. “But,” you may say, “I do trust the Lord.” What I’m discovering is that there are things that I thought I trusted the Lord with but have learned that I trust myself more in some of those areas than I do the Lord. When we can be authentic with God, let him see our real self, we are also seeing our real self. That can be scary; we may not like what we see. The next part is important. We can either push back and try to defend our false virtues (you know, the way we hope we are and want others to think we are), or we can give into the truth of who we are in the trusted grace of God. Henri Nouwen explains it like this, “Only in the context of grace can we face our sin; only in the place of healing do we dare to show our wounds; only with a single-minded attention to Christ can we give up our clinging fears and face our own true nature.” Oh how great the trust in order to let go enough for healing and transformation to take place.

The reason I decided to enter into this practice was an assignment for a program I’m in. But one reason that has kept me pressing in is a statement I read by Henri Nouwen describing those who don’t practice of silence, with a preacher as one of his examples. “Preachers preach their sermons week after week and year after year. But their parishioners remain the same and often think, ‘They are just words.’” Words spoken without time in silence with the Lord lose their transformative power.

A few days ago, I was asked what benefit I’ve personally received from this time in silence. Well, as I think back over the past month, I think it’s joy. There is a lot with that word joy, but I’ll simply let it rest there. I challenge you to try to set aside 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a week to sit in silence with God. Maybe take a few minutes to write down your experience. It’s not necessary, but it may be revealing.
