Children's Blessing

Lord, thank you for our children. May they know how much you love them. Lord, we surrender them and their futures to you; may their plans be inspired by you. Bless them with love and desire for you and for what is important to you. Surround them and their friends with your presence. Lord, encourage them and bring them your joy. Amen

From the Pastor's Desk - December

It seems like the color purple has come up a lot in the past few days and weeks. I’m still getting a barrage of seed and bulb catalogs. One of the things often highlighted is a purple flowerbed. I personally like a mix. However, I love it when looking at a sea of yellow (usually dandelions), and there is that one lone purple shooting star. It grabs my attention. There is an opportunity to pause and praise God. We can use the color purple to pause and think on the Lord.

We’ve just entered Advent. In the Advent wreath, there are three purple and one pink candle surrounding the center candle, which represents the birth of Christ. Advent can become a countdown to Christmas, and it should, but there’s more to Advent than simply counting down to Christmas. Those purple candles that are light, are light with a word, and should not go unnoticed. There should be an opportunity for us to dwell on the Lord. Each Sunday, we light a candle o remind us of the royalty of our Savior and the light he brings into the world. That light should be brought in through us, as he is living in and through us.

In the first week, we light the candle of “hope.” We hope in the promise of Jesus’ return. Rather than simply pining over a savior yet to come, we experience the hope he brings right here and right now, in whatever situation we happen to be in at the moment. Ponder the “hope” Jesus has given to you.

The second week brings the word “peace.” The peace Jesus gives us isn’t just an absence of craziness going on around us. This is inner peace no matter what is happening. This isn’t automatic either. We have to keep striving his peace. I know that seems counterintuitive, but peace takes work; it’s not passive. It requires us to focus on Jesus and not the storm.

The third week brings us the word “joy”! Simply saying the word “joy” can put a smile on your face. In fact, I’m actually smiling right now. Like peace, it is a choice, a choice to enter into the joy of the Lord rather than join the misery around us. Joy isn’t blind to the needs of people; rather, it’s caring for them. It’s seeing a person’s struggle and stepping in to help.

Finally, we get to light the fourth candle and contemplate the word “love.” That can be a hard one. We all have our ideas of what love really means. Often, love is a selfless act toward the one we love. God says if we love him, our desire will be to live out his commandments and actually do it. Jesus loves us enough to suffer on a cross for us. He also loves us enough to send us his Holy Spirit so we can live out God’s commandments. God’s whole purpose for us is for him to love us and for us to genuinely love him. Each week of Advent, take the whole week to ponder each of these words: hope, peace, joy, and love.
